Each year we see better and better compounds so unless you’re really into it it’s pretty difficult to decide which compound bow to buy. We have researched hundreds of compounds so that you won’t have to.
The best compound bow for beginners has to be cheap, yet it still needs to be of good enough quality to keep the budding archer content even in the years to come and the same goes for the best compound bow for women, with the difference that it usually needs to be available in shorter draw lengths and lower draw weights (although I’ve met some women archers to whom this didn’t apply).
PSE Ready To Shoot SurgeThe PSE Surge is going to replace its bigger brother, the PSE Brute. PSE steps up its game by giving you a lighter and faster model, along with a very nifty single-cam. The PSE Surge sets the bar very high for economical models and this Ready to Shoot Package includes Gemini Sight, Whisker Biscuit Rest, Flexxtech 2 Stabilizer, Shadow Quiver, PSE Neoprene Sling, Peep Sight and Nock Loop.
If you’re a beginner but feel sure of your own strength, then you may want to consider a higher-end compound as the quality is usually that much better and the same applies to women as well.
Best compound bow for women can be the very same I would suggest to men as long as you’re strong enough and many of the compounds reviewed here come with adjustable draw weights, but large people especially should pay attention to the draw lengths. You can easily determine your optimal draw length by measuring your arms stretched to your sides and dividing the result by 2.5.
Best Compound Bow for the Money
It may be difficult to point out the very best compound bows for sale as we all have our preferences, but I can quite confidently point out compounds which offer great value for the money. For this purpose I have chosen a compound from every price range
PSE Wave BowfishingDon’t be fooled by the way the PSE Wave Bowfishing bow looks. It may look light and fragile, but it is designed for the most rugged of environments yet. This product is intended for serious bow fishermen only! The design of the PSE Wave Bowfishing model is intended to give hunters maximum performance under the harsh hunting conditions.
Bear Archery Apprentice 2 CompoundAt this price range you’ll probably looking for a beginner model and there’re few better than the Bear Archery Apprentice II, for its price it delivers quite a punch and while it may not be the best model for hunting it can still perform quite decently once you master it. Keep in mind that this model performs a lot better with higher draw weight setting. This model is not suitable for those with a draw length greater than 27”.
Speed: 265 FPS / Draw weight: 20-60 lbs. / Draw length: 15”-27” / Weight: 2.9 lbs. / Let-off: 70%
Martin Bengal CompoundMartin Bengal Compound is in my mind the best alternative for those with greater draw lengths, it costs a little more than the Apprentice but it also performs a little better and is in every way a very good beginner model that shoots very smoothly. It also has a very good speed in this price range.
Speed: 320 FPS / Draw weight: 35-70 lbs. / Draw length: 25”-31” / Weight: 3.8 lbs. / Let-off: 65-80%
PSE Brute X CompoundIn this price range I’d have to say that one of the best models for the money is the PSE Brute X. It has a very smooth draw cycle, is very quiet and is all in all a great compund bow to go hunting with. Here I would recommend buying a package with all the accessories as this can very well be the last compound bow you’ll ever need to buy.
Speed: 320 FPS / Draw weight: 50, 60, 70 lbs. / Draw length: 25”-30” / Weight: 4.3 lbs. / Let-off: 75%
Bear Archery Motive 6In this price range you are looking at models that will probably the last you’ll ever buy. Bear Motive 6 is in mind the compound bow to go for; it’s extremely fast yet features a very smooth draw cycle, it was also much quieter than I expected and vibration was almost non-existent. Beginners should not choose this model unless they’re confident that they can handle the draw weight.
Speed: 350FPS / Draw weight: 50, 60, 70 lbs. / Draw length: 25.5”-30” / Weight: 4 lbs. / Let-off: 75%
Best Compound Bow 2014
The award for the best compound bow 2014 is in my mind Bear Motive 6, sure, it may be a little expensive, but it also performs accordingly and any serious hunter will find this compound bow more than adequate. I could describe shooting this beauty as pure poetry.
Bear Archery Venue Compound BowLooking for a no-nonsense and best all-around hunting bow? The Bear Archery Venue Compound Bow is just for you. The model is designed for long hours of holding on to, so your hands will not grow tried after 6 hours of holding it. It‘s designed to give you maximum power combined with precise control, all in one powerful yet modern model.
Best Compound Bow Under 500
The best compound bow under 500 bucks is in my opinion definitely PSE Brute X. It’s pretty rare to see a model in this price range to perform so well and no matter what you need it for, it won’t let you down. The hunters will be happy to hear that this compound bow is quite capable of harvesting even the largest game and can do this pretty quietly as well. Target shooters will probably have to invest in more durable targets.
